In my family we like to get gifts for almost every holiday! The size and quantity, of course, would depend on the holiday. I remember getting boxes in the mail for holidays like Valentines Day and St. Pats Day filled with candy and other simple things. I would always get a basket of candy and other small things like a DVD or CD for Easter. Christmas would obviously be filled with much larger and "exciting" gifts. But now that I am the "grown up" and have 2 nephews and a niece...I am the one giving the gifts.
With Easter coming up I had to decide what I would give them on these "smaller gift" holidays.
I have decided that I will not be the "fun aunt" and give Caleb, Sarah, and Gabriel each a $50 Savings Bond. My Great Aunt Jane gave me Savings Bonds when I was very little...I didn't even know I had them till after I graduated college. But when my mom gave them to me and I went to redeem them....I very much remembered my Aunt Jane and was thankful she decided to give them to me. You see...I do not remember ANY gifts I received between the ages of 1-5 but having around $350 when I was 23 I remembered and loved. Some of my bonds (because they were given to me at such a young age and had such a long time to mature) were almost double the about they were intended to be. Very Exciting!!!
This is my plan. Each year for Easter I will give Caleb, Sarah, and Gabriel a $50 Savings Bond, for Christmas a $75, and for their individual birthdays a $100. I'm thinking they will like that better when they are in their 20s like I did. At least I hope.
So its ok with me that I am the "Not So Fun" Aunt when it comes to gifts.... : )

Maybe not a fun Aunt, but a very smart one! Dave Ramesy would love this.
ReplyDeleteDave Ramsey says savings bonds are a poor investment...lol! Maybe she should open a money market account for them. ;o)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter gets $300 at Christmas and $300 for her birthday each year from my parents. You are right...she won't remember the gifts and she doesn't need anything, so the bonds are great. When she has about $1000 I plan to invest them in a money market account. She can have the best of both worlds since she gets gifts from others! Good idea!
