Looking Old...

What is it about me that makes me look older than most people my age?

Here at school a lot of the other first year teachers get mistaken as students. I find it funny sometimes. But I NEVER get that.

Also, at the winter guard festival this weekend, while everyone was being extremely nice and telling me how good I looked, someone said "Sonja, you look so old." I know they probably meant that I looked "older" or maybe even "more mature" but it still kinda hit me hard. And then I thought.....I kinda get that a lot.

When I met with John for the first time this summer to talk about Willard he said the same thing to me. That I looked so much older.

What has changed about me that makes me look so much older? And is that something I want? I like that my students don't seem to think of me as a "young teacher" and that I don't get mistaken for a student when I go places with my guard. But I don't want to look "old!"

What is it......

  1. Oh, man, I can't wait to be an older looking teacher. I think if my physical appearance changes more, I would be a more effective high school teacher. Physical apperance did not affect me as teacher of younger students as much as it did high schoolers! Its so weird when the students have the same clothes as you. I think that is when I started to shop LandsEnd.com so I would not have the same clothes as all the kids who also shop at Targetr!

  2. Hmm.. I have the opposite problem. I don't know what it is that makes people think I'm so young (besides my small size of course). But as Mrs. Haid said, looking older as a teacher is mostly beneficial. I didn't get much respect when I subbed/aided at schools.

Why can't we just look our age?
